Zumelle Castle

Zumelle Castle is located in the Belluno Prealps, in the hilly area between Val Belluna and the Feltre district, in a position that overlooks a stretch of territory that has always been strategic for controlling the routes between plain and mountain. The lay of the land, with an isolated and easily defensible hill, made it over the centuries a military reference point for those contesting passage through this part of the Veneto.

Its origins are intertwined with medieval legends linked to local noble families, but the structure seen today bears the marks of later rebuilding, typical of castles that continued to serve defensive functions until the Renaissance, before being abandoned and eventually restored in modern times. Walls, towers and the inner courtyard reveal a layering of construction that reflects the changes in defensive techniques over the centuries.

The visit unfolds at a slow pace, following the path between the outer walls and the inner spaces, with the chance to look out over the surrounding hilly landscape from above. The shoulder seasons, spring and autumn, offer the best conditions to appreciate both the structure and its natural setting, without the summer heat that makes the climb up to the hill less comfortable.
